Derwent House

minima. was approached by award-winning design and build company, Javelin Block, to supply key pieces for the show apartment of Derwent House, a grade II-listed former foundry in the heart of Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter.
Originally constructed for the firm of Taylor and Challen who manufactured machinery for the city’s metal-working trades and motor industry, the 105-year-old building spans 40,000 square feet and has been reanimated into 40 one and two bed duplex and single-storey apartments.
Working with such a historically significant site warranted the selection of heritage design pieces, careful consideration and a minimalist approach to let the building’s characteristics shine through.
At minima. we called upon the iconic Eames Lounge Chair to create a Modernist statement in the ground floor winter garden, surrounded by an array of sculptural garden and balcony planters by Ferm Living.
Up the winding spiral staircase, a bespoke String shelving configuration provided a neat working-from-home desk set up in the living room while the slimline profile of the Muuto Outline sofa propelled the interior design into the modern day.
